Getting started
What does Dressage Calling do?
It turns a dressage test you've built into spoken cues. Use Rehearsal to step through the test visually and memorise it away from the arena, or Live calling to have the app watch your phone's compass during a ride and speak each cue as the previous movement completes.
How do I build a test?
From the test list, create a new test and use the Builder to add movements one at a time — pick a type (static, standard, or advanced), then the specific move, then any details (side, diameter, target letter). The arena diagram updates live as you build.
How does Live calling know where I am?
It reads your phone's compass. At the start of a ride, you tell the app which direction is A→C by one of three methods:
- Time — a short countdown while you stand still facing A→C
- Button — press a Bluetooth headphone button as you ride onto the centre line, aligned A→C
- Voice — say "go" as you ride onto the centre line, aligned A→C
From that one moment, the app tracks your orientation relative to the arena for the rest of the ride.
Troubleshooting
Cues seem to fire at the wrong time
This is almost always a calibration issue. Make sure you were genuinely aligned A→C at the moment you triggered the start (Time/Button/Voice), and that your phone isn't rotating loosely in a pocket. Indoor arenas with a lot of metal (kickboards, mirrors) can also affect compass accuracy — if cues are consistently off in one arena, try a different phone position (chest pocket vs. hip pocket).
Voice start ("say go") isn't detecting
Check the app has microphone permission (Android Settings → Apps → Dressage Calling → Permissions). Speak the trigger word clearly; the on-device recognizer is tuned for quiet speech but very muffled audio (e.g. a thick coat pocket) can still miss it — the Button or Time method are good fallbacks.
The Bluetooth headphone button doesn't trigger anything
Some headphones route media-button presses to whichever app last produced audio. Make sure Dressage Calling is the active app (not paused music) when you press the button, and that your headphones are connected before you start the ride.
No sound / cues aren't speaking
Check your phone's media volume (not ringer volume) and that headphones or speaker are connected. Check Settings → Voice in the app for your selected voice.
